If you want to see some early "surrealism", check out Hieronymus Bosch. He is northern renaissance painter, but his visions of hell will melt you mind!

Thanks for taking the time to write up this great post. I've been looking for shows to start submitting to and I have to say I fall into the 2 points about juried show - filling in my cv and playing around with themes. I hadn't heard of Art House Co-op, really interesting! I'll definitely participate in a few of their projects now. Thanks!

You know what always scares me? Objects that look like other objects. Like... when it is dark and I am walking to my bathroom, the coat rack looks like a big guy hulking in my living room. The worst scare I ever had was when car lights turned on and cast the silhouette of a tree on my door; so when I closed the door it looked like a white shadow moving/getting bigger. Don't know if you could do a painting of something like that... but eek!
